Packing and equipment
The laptop is delivered in a cardboard box, made in the original colors of Irbis. In the kit for the gadget, the manufacturer defined a power supply with a proprietary connector and a set of documentation.
The upper and lower panels of the Irbis NB116 are made of matte metal in black, and the hood casings and the areas around the keyboard are made of plastic. The lid is marked with the manufacturer’s logo, on the bottom – the name of the model, there are also four non-slip feet and two perforated areas behind which the loudspeakers are hidden.
On the display of the laptop “out of the box” two films are glued. One of them, advertising, needs to be removed before use, and the second, transparent, is designed to protect the screen from scratches. This is the right decision, especially given that the display is not covered by glass, but plastic. Under the screen is the Windows touch key, and even lower – a 2 megapixel webcam. This arrangement of the lens seems rather strange: to prevent the keyboard from falling into the frame, the cover must be strongly deflected back, because of which the interlocutor will look at you from below upwards. On the other hand, with video calls in tablet mode, this problem will not be.
The keyboard for such a compact device was not bad. Of course, the manufacturer had to sacrifice the size of the navigation keys with arrows, and also to move the Home, End, Page Up, Page Down and Insert buttons to other keys, but the solution is well thought out: for example, the Num Lock mode allows you to enter numbers and mathematical symbols not through a series of digital keys, and with the help of the alphabetic block in the right part of the keyboard, on which numbers and signs are marked in blue. After a short practice on the keyboard Irbis NB116 can be printed quickly and without any inconvenience.
Due to its modest dimensions and weight, which is a little more than a kilogram, the gadget is convenient to use both as a laptop and as a tablet. It almost does not feel when you wear it in your bag or rucksack every day, which is an important factor for those who always take a laptop with them.
The black metal case collects fingerprints that are visible in bright light, but this is not too much of a problem – after all, it’s strange to expect an irresistible appearance from the working typewriter. The plastic parts of the case creak a little when squeezing, but there were no obvious problems with the quality of the work.
The laptop is equipped with an 11.6-inch IPS-matrix with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, which gives about 190 ppi. The quality of the screen claims no: it is bright, and the picture is clear, contrasting and juicy. Of course, you can complain about the lack of protective glass and oleophobic coating, but before us, after all, a budget device.
Since the NB166 is a transformer, the opening angle of the laptop cover is all 360 degrees, and the picture remains clear and does not distort at any angle of inclination.
Irbis NB116 runs under Windows 10 Home Home. The manufacturer did not become addicted to the customization of the operating system, but pre-installed several third-party programs. These are two educational applications “Foxford” from the Windows Store, as well as fresh versions of FineReader, designed for efficient work with PDF and paper documents and Lingvo interpreter from ABBYY. Both programs are offered with a three-month trial period – a good bonus for the work device. In the rest – we have “clean” Windows 10, and if you do not need preinstalled applications, you can easily delete them.
Of the wireless modules Irbis NB116 is equipped with Wi-Fi with support for 802.11b / g / n in the frequency range of 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth 4.2 with support for low power consumption. The interfaces work smoothly, the connection is stable, no signal loss occurred in the Wi-Fi coverage area.
Irbis NB116 is equipped with a non-removable Li-Ion battery for 8000 mAh, thanks to which the laptop can hold out for office use (brightness slightly above average, Wi-Fi is turned on, mainly in the browser) for about seven hours. No worse than the gadget showed itself when playing video at full brightness in the “Flight” mode – with this load the device is able to work about 4.5 hours from the full charge of the battery. The laptop showed about the same result in games at medium brightness. Extend the battery life by 10-20%, depending on the usage scenario, you can turn on the standard for Windows 10 power saving function.
